Helping Bring Spring Along a Little Quicker

It's finally starting to feel like spring a little bit.  While we were in the deep freeze last week, my husband and I spent some much needed time in sun this weekend washing cars and sitting on the deck soaking up the rays.  In an effort to bring on spring, we are working on getting our veggie garden ready for the summer growing season and the seed start has begun.  I order my seeds from Botanical Interests, and in the most recent catalogue they provided a real cool guide on when to start certain seeds indoors.  Handy!

Here's what we've started so far!

We also started planting in waves so last week I planted one row of artichokes and this week we added another row and so on so we could space out the harvest a little bit.

It looks a little sparse right now, but it's growing!

Next up this week we have pepper planting time.  I started with green and orange seeds, but in the weeks to come I'll make sure to add a red variety and yellow variety too.

Here's how I like to plant my onion seeds.  I do know you can buy bulb sets and plant those directly into the soil, but I prefer this method.  It brings some more green into the house this time of year.  A piece of cardboard is cut to size to separate my varieties.  I get a lot of onions this way and only plant the strongest plants in the garden, and also get to choose how many I plant the rest go into the compost.

I know you need a magnifying glass to see these little sprouts, but I promise they're there.  We are off to a good start this year so far.

Next up in the following weeks will be cabbage, tomatoes, and broccoli.  With snow in the forecast for this coming weekend, we are going to get into the workshop and build some cold frames custom to the size of our garden beds.  Keep you posted and happy planting.
