We've been harvesting and harvesting from our long awaited dream vegetable garden. It's been a stellar year for sure with an excellent harvest thus far. The one thing I didn't think of was how am I going to store all of this excellent produce. We have been freezing and canning, but some of it you just have to give away or eat yourself now! We needed a storage system for the counter to keep us neat and organized so we made one that fit our space perfectly.
We salvaged this wood from an old box-spring mattress that we disassembled, the same one that we made our No Trespassing Sign from; it's crazy how much wood comes from just one box-spring.
Here's our pile to work with, and we still have more wood we can use.
We measured out how big we wanted the box to be, and started building from there. It's 6" tall by 8" wide by 2' long, so we cut our wood accordingly.
Using our brad nailer and wood glue we constructed our box
We left a gap at the bottom to allow air to flow nicely around our veggies to help sustain there life.
Once the glue is dry, we give it a light sanding using 120 grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots.
Next I use my favorite tool, the blow torch, to totally transformation not only the color but the accentuation of the wood grain as well.
Finally we coat the entire box in a clear polyurethane.
We now have a décor matching rustic looking harvest storage box that didn't cost us anything but a little time, and it's a great accent to kitchen as a whole. Zucchini anyone??
