Upcycled Old Sewing Table

Better Homes and Gardens magazine is amongst one of my favorite magazines to get.  I discovered in the latest couple of issues people who have recycled old furniture and turned it into something fabulous!  We got the buzz here too, and had the perfect piece to turn around for this upcycling challenge!

Poor old thing did not look super pretty before, she was definitely beat up.

The top was really unsalvageable in it's current condition.

It still had the singer sewing machine in the cabinet, but it also was not in great shape.  After a little digging about it's potential value, the decision was made not to restore it, but repurpose it into an end table between my couches.  I got lucky I think because I got by far the prettiest cabinet that comes with this sewing machine model the Queen Anne style cabinet.

There was some water damage at one point and some of the original finish had some alligator skin,  however we decided to leave all that untouched and have it come through in the final look of the piece.

The cabinet was walnut so a dark walnut stain was in order.

After waiting what feels like forever, we added the polyurethane coat in a satin finish to seal up and protect the wood.

Now for our top we used this upholstery fabric that was extra from a window treatment we created.  Haven't decided yet on a main theme color for our basement, but this fabric pretty much gives us the option to choose whatever color we like.

After cutting our fabric to size we used this batting material leftover from another project to be used between our material and wood surface.  The top was a little uneven and beat up, so this material will assist in not making that so noticeable in the final product.

Using decorative nails we secure all four corners.

Then split the distance from one corner to another and placed a tack at the half way point.

Then divided it two more time to evenly space our tacks all the way around the cabinet.

All evenly spaced

Next we free hand the rest of the spacing, and here is the finished look.

And where you would normally see sewing needles and thread now neatly holds a few extra pieces of our pool stick equipment.

Few decorations for the top, and our end table is complete.  I did it Better Homes and Gardens!  We should submit this!!
