There have been a lot of cool how-to's on advent calendars and wreaths we've been seeing, so we got inspired to make our own homemade calendar that fits our decor just right.
Perfect next to the tree with all the kids' handmade ornaments. Come on an see how we did it!
We started out with a piece of 4 foot by 4 foot pine board,
and cut it to size, in this case we made it 2 foot wide by 3 foot long.
We started out with a light walnut stain, we love the way it adds depth and contrast to the final piece. It's definitely worth the extra dry time.
Next up we use a off-white paint, beat it into our paint brush and lightly cover the board. We still want the grain and the stain to show through.
While that dries, we make our numbers!
We purchased little boxes and paper bags, and filled each of them with candy. We might have eaten just a couple of pieces during the packing process!! Don't tell!
Then we wrapped the boxes in white craft paper.
Added our numbers using red and green sharpies,
And we were ready for a test fit!
We took a pencil when all the boxes and bags were laid out, and drew a light line around them to get an idea of where our hand-painted tree would be placed. We did a little mixing of holly green and sap green craft paint to give depth to our tree.
To secure them to the board we hot glued a small piece of ribbon to each number, and then used small push pins to keep them on the board. The kids should have no trouble getting them down each day!!
It's not too late to make one, plus the kids will like a double dose of candy tonight!
