Helping Bring Spring Along a Little Quicker

It's finally starting to feel like spring a little bit.  While we were in the deep freeze last week, my husband and I spent some much needed time in sun this weekend washing cars and sitting on the deck soaking up the rays.  In an effort to bring on spring, we are working on getting our veggie garden ready for the summer growing season and the seed start has begun.  I order my seeds from Botanical Interests, and in the most recent catalogue they provided a real cool guide on when to start certain seeds indoors.  Handy!

Last 5% is in

The weather in Colorado this year is just crazy.  With a high of 65 degrees and a flood advisory in place for a portion of the weekend, more rain is on the way.  Trying to get the last 5% of my garden planted has been a tough go.  Last week I used my sprouting method to get my pumpkins going so I could plant them this week.  We relaxed over the weekend at our place near Wheatland, WY, and I was ready to plants these sprouts once we got back this week.  One more problem besides the weather, the place I purchase my dirt for my raised beds didn't have any.  Due to the weather as well, they are behind on making it.  So I had to improvise where I put the rest of my veggies, because my big garden without dirt in the raised beds is no good.

The front flower bed was the only place I had left with dirt to put in my veggies. This has been a big project to beautify the front of the house, and it's not quite full of flowers just yet, perfect space for the veggies, sort of.

These guys were so ready to get into the ground.  Planted the white pumpkin, a large pumpkin, and of coarse the knotty pumpkin.

Still have to figure out how to keep the deer away, and build them a trellis to grow up instead of out, but there in.

Finished it off by planting zucchini, yellow squash, and green beans.

Hopefully by the time the second round of planting happens later in the summer for the fall harvest, the big garden will have dirt in its raised beds, and ready to take a few plants.  Cross your fingers!

The Garden is in!

Ok, so I know that it's a little behind schedule for my garden to be in just last week, but Colorado has had an unusually cold wet spring.  It snowed on Mother's day, for the second year in a row, and then didn't warm up much after that.  But last week I got 95% of all my seedlings in.

Cucumber seedlings are doing great.
Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage are in
All the herbs got planted, basil included
The strawberry patch is on it's way to a great productive season
The blackberry patch is growing

Dream garden is coming along, slow but sure. The chicken coop is in, and the ladies are very happy.  Got the fence up along the back of the garden, sprinkler line and electric trenched in and buried, and more work is going in.  Stay tuned.

Gardening Heaven

Just finished weeding one of my flower gardens, and couldn't resist sharing my little piece of heaven!

We have the little fenced in area, not to keep out the deer, but at once we had a dog, and with no fence around the property this was one way to keep our dog in when we weren't playing with him in the yard.  It had some pea gravel in it, and that got removed when I started creating this special space.

Salvia, penstemon, iris, and white daisies dominate this flowery landscape.  These are just a few of the flowering plants that the deer won't eat, and therefore I have them everywhere in every garden.

Just a little corner of my gardening world.

Finally project complete

It's been a crazy and fast spring season this year, like it is every year, but for some reason I had a multitude of things to do this spring.  I finally finished one, yes just one, of my flower beds.  I have a couple of retaining walls in my backyard that give me the opportunity to have a flat fun backyard, and I have always had a few plants in there, but mostly the weeds took over because I never finished it.  This year (drum roll please) I have finished it.  Sensing a theme?  Yes, finished!!

View from the deck, yet to be finished, and the stairs that lead out of my backyard yet to be finished, but working on it!!  And the little square space is for the outdoor fireplace. Still need to come up with a design, I don't have a vision just yet, but send me pics if you have some good ideas.

I still finally have something to celebrate.  Beautiful red daylilies, white daisies, and purple penstemons.
I have dark purple bearded iris, plus ornamental grass.

But my favorite has to be the wine and roses.
Gorgeous deep red foliage with pretty pink flowers in the spring.  I did splurge a little and purchase these beauties!

The project became less expensive, because I divided the flowers in my existing gardens, and added them to this wall space, plus the rock came from a neighbor and my own stash seen here.  The retaining wall blocks off to the left are where our above ground pool sits in the summer, but guess what...another project on the horizon is to expand the space for a bigger pool.  I know, I'm crazy, you might think I like dirt work, but alas I don't!  Tramp will be moved, along with much of this rock, and a new pool will be in it's place hopefully by the end of next week.  Stay tuned to see how it's going, or if I can still move my body!
